About
It all started when…
In 1996, Tulsa, Oklahoma faced significant challenges related to drugs, teen pregnancy, and gang violence. The city struggled with the rampant use of crack cocaine and methamphetamine, which fueled crime and poverty. Teen pregnancy rates were high due to limited access to sex education and healthcare. Gang activity, influenced by national groups like the Bloods and Crips, led to increased violence. Law enforcement and community programs worked tirelessly to address these issues, but the obstacles remained formidable.
During these trying times, the Things Happening Youth Program (THYP) was established in 1997 by Ulina Jamison, Co-Pastor of The Day of Pentecost Church, now known as New Life Restoration Church, located in north Tulsa, Oklahoma. THYP was initially part of the church’s mission to reclaim the community from the grips of drugs, gang violence, and teen pregnancy. Mrs. Jamison dedicated years to empowering youth in underprivileged communities by fostering work ethics, educational success, and moral values.
In 2019, new Director Tammy Thompson initiated changes to the program, leading to its incorporation and subsequent renaming to Things Happening Youth Program Inc. (THYPI). This transition allowed the organization to become independent of the church and gain recognition as a 501(c)(3) organization. Since then, THYPI has seen increased participation and partnerships. The organization collaborates with community schools and other non-profits to maximize productivity. Extensive research has guided the development of current community programs aimed at addressing the persistent challenges, including educational resource deficits, lack of positive influences, and future planning.
